Sunshine! It exists! Flowers are appearing everywhere, the buds on the trees get larger and greener every day. The grass is gaining its shine again, and my car needs a good washing to gain its shine as well. The weather is warming up, or at least trying, and I think it's time to appreciate the lovely weather. It feels great just to get outside and enjoy everything, listen to the birds or the wind in the trees. Enjoy that sunshine! And don't forget the sunscreen, 21 days left until the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Vestal!

Mayday! Mayday!

If you're in any formal education classes, no matter how relaxed a person you are, this distress is going off in your mind this time of year. Yep, the last few weeks of April seem so far away, but here they are slamming into us, flying at the speed of light, only reminding us that May is on its way. Who doesn't want May, you might ask? Anyone who's in school, that's who, because what is one step closer to summer is also one step closer to those final exams and they're closing in! Run!
Okay, no, don't run. Everyone calm down. See, exams are just another deadline; sadly, there's usually about five at once. This isn't horrible though, and it's only taken me four years to grasp it (and I'm sure a few more years to actually put my new plan into effect).
I'm surrounded by people in advanced classes, which is why May is the crucial month in my opinion, because all advanced classes give their exams in that month, while regular finals usually come in June. AP (advanced placement) courses are tough, but teachers try really hard to prepare you for them, they have resources, there are plenty of practice tests online, and there are textbooks for them. IB (International Baccalaureate [back-uh-lor-e-it])is a little different, mostly because it's so new, but resources are available, so please, chill.
There's time to chill, it's still early, but don't chill too much. I've come across some great revelations just from wasting time on the weekends. Most kids get home around five thirty if they have an after school activity, and guess what? Five thirty is six hours away from a bed-time that should provide enough sleep. That's a decent chunk of time to do homework, eat some food, study, work out, and shower, you just can't let yourself get too distracted. Facebook? That's tons of fun, but save that for chill time, besides, it's mostly poeple complaining and raising corn, so get on, then get off. Food can take a while to prepare, but I find that healthy foods are actually easier to make (especially if you are a vegetarian like moi) and they can generally be picked apart and eaten in a snackish manner, which is quick. A workout is easy to fit in; walk your dog (two tasks at once!), run around the block, walk up in the woods, whatever. If you can't at night, do it in the morning. The shower is an easy place to lolly-gag, but if you get in, wash (everything), and get out, you can leave the day-dreaming for before falling asleep.
During the week, there really is only so much of a schedule you can make with school there, that becomes an issue of priorities. Do you really need to see your boyfriend/girlfriend that night, or can he/she wait until tomorrow (I know you're reading this Dad, I know you're saying huh, but I told you, the plan might take a few years to get into effect). The weekends are where some real study dammage can be done.
This is a really crazy idea, I've only just discovered it, but if you wake up before ten, it gives you a whole chunk of day! Imagine what you can get done with all those extra hours! I'm not saying sacrifice your night times, or become a hermit with no friends, but it IS exam time, that's back to priorities. Maybe just sleep in Sundays, and wake up early (ish) on Saturdays to allow yourself some time to get stuff done.
My plan is not perfect, and you've probably been hearing it since you were in seventh grade, but until I tried them, I never cared. I, myself, work better under pressure, but that doesn't mean I leave everything until the last day. Maybe the second to last day, but again with the plan... No, but really. The whole thing is staying on track and keeping motivated, wasting time is just that, a waste. And while I also realize that the whole idea of excersizing seems like a strange thing to force into a tight schedule, it really serves as an excellent way to release some steam, and during these stressful times, healthy choices are the best choices.

Relay for Life

Relay for Life is coming up soon! In fact, in Vestal, there's only 29 days left! The relay will be held on May 21 to May 22 at Sammon Field on Clayton Avenue. The American Cancer Society holds this event in various towns and counties around our area to raise money in the fight against cancer; each team sets its own goals to donate as well. The National Honor Society at Vestal High School has made a goal of F$8000, all of which will go towards research for cancer.
How can you help? Vestal National Honor Society is hosting a car wash as well as a can and bottle drive on May 1, located in the parking lot in front of Tractor Supply co. on the Vestal Parkway from 11-2. A car wash is $5, with all money going towards the goal. Doug's Fish Fry will also be there, and I've heard they're quite fantastic.

English Riding, Boyfriends, and Bubble Tea…. The ruminations of my life…

So I’m Millennial Generation Shadduck. My grandpa Norm established the insurance agency with pens, paper, a telephone, and word of mouth. My dad and my uncles continued my grandpa’s hard work, but began to transition to computer software, cell phones, and automated billing. Me…. I’m the one who answers the “old guys’” questions regarding technology, and smirks a bit while I blog, text and Facebook all at the same time. With much chagrin, they thought perhaps if I wrote a little on a blog, they would “get the hang of it” and take off . I’m sure, with their techno savvy, I will be here for a loooooooonnnnngggg time.

Let’s get back to the generation title for a sec. My generation is called the Millennial Generation, the Net Generation, and Generation Next. We could have been born anywhere between 1975 and early 2000’s, although it seems to me that a 30 year old is GENERATIONS away from my group, but hey, we have to start somewhere. Our “claim to fame” so far has been an intense familiarity with communication, media, and digital technologies. Boil that down, and yes, I have a cell phone, an Ipod, a laptop, and various gaming systems for different challenges. And yes, I’m using them all RIGHT NOW. We don’t call each other, or sit on “party lines” like my parents did when they were kids, we text eight or ten of us at a time to plan our days. We don’t talk face to face, we blog and email, using shortened “text talk” which reminds my Mamam of the Cockney Rhyming slang of her childhood, and it understood by no one over the age of 25! LOL We plug in, tune out, and turn on. But along with our techno eccentricities, we are the walking future. And unlike the human-in-a-costume aliens of all those thriller seeking sci-fi movies of yesteryear, we are here to help. Bwaaahhhaaahaaa….

What is a Nor'easter?

I think it's a terrible April Fool's Joke? It's a bad, bad word especially since Spring has started? Ok what is a Nor'easter? It is often used to refer to any strong rain or snow storm that occurs in the northeast part of the United States, regardless of season, prevailing wind direction, direction of storm travel, or the geographic origin of the storm. Usually nor'easters bring massive amounts of precipitation, high winds, large waves, and marginal storm surge to coastal areas. Depending on the circumstances and the time of year, nor'easters can bring rain, ice, and snow. Ice, snow, and high winds can shut down major airports for days leaving thousands stranded. Ice and snow can also shut down major highways and interstates leaving motorists unable to reach their destinations. During nor'easters, many people lose power because of high winds, ice, and snow. If you are like most people (Including Me) I have watched the local news and the weather channel to see how bad this storm is really going to be. Predictions start a trace of snow all the way up to a foot depending upon how, where and when the nor'easter will hit us. Well I guess all we can do is wait just like everyone else to see what MOTHER NATURE brings us again!

Spring into Snow!

Yesterday, march 23, 2011, the Binghamton area was hit with roughly half a foot of snow, much to the disappointment of the residents. Just the week before, the Spring weather with temperatures as high as 60 degrees got everyone's hopes up that the Winter weather was gone for good. motorcycles were on the roads, kids were wearing shorts, and snow blowers were being stored away until the next storm, which arrived much too early in many people's opinions. SO what's left to look forward to?

It looks like more cold weather. This week's temeratuers aren't supposed to rise over forty degrees. This means chilly mornings, which leads to icy roads, frozen windshields, and slippery walkways. To play it safe, leave for work about ten minutes earlier than you normally would, in order to clear off your car, and take everything slow in the morning.

Important Propane Safety Information

If you smell gas. Propane smells like rotten eggs, a skunk's spray or a dead animal. IMMEDIATELY put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.

Leave the area IMMEDIATELY! Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking. Shut off the gas. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is SAFE to do so. Report the LEAK. From a neighbor's home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call your propane retailer right away. Also call 911 and/or your local fire department.

Do not return to the building or area until your propane retailer, emergency responder, or a qualified technician determines it is safe to do so. Get your system checked. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak free.

How Aging Affects the Ability to Drive

MIND: Reaction time slows, confusion grows, quick decisions become more difficult and distractions have greater impact.

EYES: Aging causes several vision problems that can interfere with driving. Signs include blurred, hazy, sensitive to light and/or reduced peripheral vision to name just a few.

NECK: The neck stiffens, motion becomes painful, glancing over one shoulder to look for traffic becomes difficult. Arthritis can make it hard to grip the steering wheel.

KNEES, ANKLES & FEET: Joints stiffen, foot and knee movement becomes difficult and painful, gas pedal gets pushed instead of the brake.

Having “The Talk” is never easy, but it’s necessary. New York State has no laws that require elderly drivers to prove they are still capable of driving. That decision is totally left up to the driver or his or her family.

Winter Weather and Speed Don't Mix

It's obvious that weather can be unpredictable any time of the year. For many, having President's Day off was a bonus so you didn't have to drive to work and kids didn't have to go to school and face another day of snow covered roads. There were still many people out there this morning including me.

For the most part many drivers were cautious but there were still a few who felt the roads were ok to speed on. You always need to compensate for poor traction by slowing down and giving the vehicle in front of you plenty of space in the event something goes wrong. Accelerate smoothly and slowly to avoid skidding, slipping or sliding. Brake early and brake slowly to lessen your chance of losing control. Plan your turns and avoid abrupt actions. Keep alert for changes in the road surface. Remember that ice and snow are most dangerous when the temperature is at or near the freezing mark.

Don't speed up to try and make up time. It's not worth putting your own life or the lives of others in danger.

It's Tax Time Again

Here are a few important tips from Shadduck Insurance when filing your tax returns. There are common errors you want to avoid to minimize the chance of an audit...and nobody wants to go through that!

Make sure all your social security numbers on the return are correct. Math errors are another common mistake especially when subtracting. Forgetting to sign and date the return. Don't forget to attach all the paperwork like W-2's. Failing to file because you can't pay in full is a BIG MISTAKE! File your return on time. Willful failure to file your taxes is a federal crime. You have to file the return whether you owe any money or not. There are many more "common tax errors" but we just mentioned a few of the major ones.

The Early Years

As we begin 2011, we look forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary and sharing this huge achievement with all of our clients, friends and families!

The business was founded by Norman Shadduck Sr on September 25, 1961. Since he grew up and raised his family on the East Side of Binghamton, it was a natural choice for him to start the business where he lived, had many friends and past business relationships. Norm's dream was to provide EXCELLENT LOCAL PERSONAL SERVICE to all that called or stopped by the office. The old building located at 288 Robinson St was purchased in 1969, remodeled and opened for business in 1970. His sons Norm, Mark & Dave joined their father and purchased the agency in 1988.

Move Over Law

In New York State, effective January 1, 2011 new legislation was passed that would protect law enforcement and emergency workers from motorists.

Motorists would be required to exercise due caution and change lanes when approaching a parked, stopped or standing emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. The "Move Over Law" aims to protect police officers, fire, medical and other emergency workers from the danger of vehicles traveling at high speeds only feet away from them.

When it comes to the community's law enforcement and emergency workers, SAFETY should be our number one priority!

How to Lock Your Car and Why

A friend shared this story and I thought it was well worth the reading!

"I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times. Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation. I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight to the police station, told them what had happened and found out I was part of a new and very successful scheme being used to gain entry into cars."

There is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device. They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door by hitting the lock button inside the car -- that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you. When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen. This is very real. Be wisely aware of what you just read. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote just to be sure we remembered to lock them -- and bingo, someone has our code...and whatever was in our car.

Reading the Signs

Ten signs it's time for older drivers to hand over the keys:

1. Frequent "Close Calls."

2. Dents or scrapes on the car, fences, mailboxes, garage doors, curbs, etc.

3. Trouble judging gaps in traffic at intersections and on the highway.

5. Getting lost.

6. Trouble seeing the sides of the road.

7. Slower response time. Confusing the gas & brake pedals.

Broome Man Alive THANKS to Friend's Quick Thinking

While reading the Sunday newspaper yesterday I was searching for that special feel good article hidden in all of the bad depressing news. I wasn't disappointed! There it was a photo of 3 friends...Bill Gorman and Brian Bailey used the HeartSine Technologies Defibrillator that saved the life of their golf buddy, Ray Gee on August 13th of this year when he collapsed on the eighth green of the Conklin Players Club.

So many positives out of this story. First, Bill Gorman is a volunteer fireman for the Town of Conklin and knew how to administer CPR. Second, the clubhouse had a defibrillator mounted on the lobby wall where Matt Smith barreled a golf cart back 600 yards to get the device. Third, the club owner Theresa Rickard had purchased the machine about a year ago because the state required it. Ray Gee is alive today because of his friends and the actions of others and I am sure this Thanksgiving will mean much more to him than ever before.

That's the kind of story I enjoy reading about and it was nice to know we have men like these in our community!!!

Is Your Car Winter Ready?

With colder weather upon us be sure to make an appointment for a tune up and inspection. By following a few tips you'll be less likely to be stranded on a cold morning. Also keep a few items on hand in case of an emergency.

Have your brakes checked along with the battery and electrical system. Always make sure you have plenty of gas in your tank. Snow tires increase your traction and should be installed on all four wheels. In regions with little snow and moderate winter temperatures, all season tires may be suitable. All season tires tend to stiffen and lose gripping power around zero Celsius. This loss of traction on icy or snow covered roads may become critical for safety as temperatures drop.

Always carry a windshield scraper and snow brush, lightweight shovel, sand or kitty litter, spare tire, wheel wrench and jack, first aid kit, blanket, flashlight, cables and flares.

When driving this winter always clear the snow and ice from your car and allow extra travel time and drive defensively.

Comparing the value of your belongings to the "contents" limit listed in your policy helps you make sure you have enough insurance to replace them if they are lost, stolen or destroyed as a result of a covered loss. An inventory also makes filing a claim easier.

The easiest way to take an inventory is to use a video camera if you have one, recording and describing items as you walk through the house. Or you can use a regular camera and create a home inventory checklist. Add brand names and descriptions. Keep any receipts you have on large ticket items. Store your video or photo inventory offsite so you won't lose it if your house is damaged. Always update your personal property records when you purchase new furnishings and valuables.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist

When the person at fault for an accident does not have insurance, Uninsured Motorists Bodily Injury coverage will cover injuries and damages you incur that the at-fault party is legally liable for, such as medical treatment and lost wages.

The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, sponsers National Cyber Security Awareness Month every October since its founding in 2003. Driving Rain

Dog Owner Liability

There are three kinds of law that impose liability on owners:

1. Dog-bite statute: The dog owner is automatically liable for any injury or property damage the dog causes, even without provoation.

2. One-bite rule: In some states, the owner is not held liable for the first bite the dog inflicts. Once an animal has demonstrated vicious behavior, such as biting or otherwise displaying a "vicious propensity," the owner can be held liable.

New Flood Zones

I recently read an article in the newspaper regarding the new flood zone rules and requirements for Broome County that FEMA released. It used to be the “American Dream” to own a home but with so many taxes, restrictions and regulations it has become almost impossible for some to do that.

A few months ago the flood zone maps were updated because the 100 year FEMA maps were not accurate. This change will become mandatory in 2011 for homeowners with a mortgage in these new zones to purchase flood insurance. Now these new flood zones will cost homeowners even more money if they decide to build or renovate in these areas because of new code restrictions that are being passed down by our local and state government agencies.

Last year a neighbor was outside cooking on the grill. My husband and I were enjoying the weather in our backyard when we noticed the gas grill had caught fire. The grill was quite close to the house when flames started shooting up. There was no one outside checking on the food so my husband immediately jumped over the fence and rolled the grill away from the house and shut it off. A gas propane tank was located only a few feet away. If we hadn't been outside at that particular time, who knows what could have happened.

Make sure your grill is at least 10 feet away from your house, garage or overhanging trees. Store and use your grill on a large flat surface that cannot burn such as concrete or asphalt. Teen Drivers Face New Restrictions

Teen drivers with a learners permit - which can be obtained at age 16 - will have to wait six months before they can schedule a road test for a license. The law also increases from 20 hours to 50 hours, including 15 hours at night, the amount of driving that a parent or guardian needs to verify before a teen driver can get a license.

Lastly, drivers with a junior license or junior permit will be limited to one non-family passenger under the age of 21 in the vehicle unless they are accompanied by an adult. People aged 16 to 24 make up about 16 percent of all drivers in New York, but accounted for about 26 percent of all injuries and fatalities in automobile accidents in 2008. Detectors To Become Mandatory

A new law will go into effect on February 22, 2010 requiring carbon monoxide detectors in nearly all New York homes, condomiums, dormitories and other residences.

Amanda's Law will change the state building code to make detectors mandatory in any residence with an attached garage or appliance that produces carbon monoxide, such as gas-or wood-powered furnaces or hot-water tank.

The device must be installed on the lowest level of the house with a bedroom, according to the law. Code enforcement officials can issue a fine or an appearance ticket if a home is found without a detector during normal inspections.

Carbon monoxide is a clear, odorless gas that is produced any time there is combustion. Poisoning from the gas kills about 400 people and injures over 20,000 each year nationally.

Texting While Driving Ban Starts in Broome County

On 11/1/2009 New York will become the 14th state to enforce a ban on texting while driving. But unlike most of the others states, you won’t be pulled over for the violation.

New York’s ban is deemed a secondary enforcement law, meaning police would have to pull a driver over for another offense to be hit with a texting fine.

In August, Governor David Paterson signed the texting-while-driving ban and also made it illegal to use other portable devices while at the wheel. The maximum fine is $150. The law comes after a series of deadly car accidents involving teenagers.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless and colorless gas, which could be created whenever a fuel (such as wood, gasoline, coal, natural gas, kerosene, etc) is burning. It is estimated that, in this country, carbon monoxide poisoning from fuel-burning appliances causes more than 200 deaths each year and more than 5,000 trips to the emergency room.

The symptoms associated with carbon monoxide poisoning are much like the flu, headaches, nausea and fatigue, but without the fever. Children tend to be more susceptible than adults. It is called the silent killer because it often goes undetected until it is too late.

The 5K and 10K runs for the 27^th annual Oktoberfest will take place Saturday October 3^rd at Highland Park in Endwell, NY. There is a $12 registration fee if you are racing on Saturday but you can also run for fun for free. This is a fundraiser for the American Red Cross and BAE Systems’ Charity Challenge partner. Paying Late Could Leave You High And Dry!
